Alula: Home Security for Security ProfessionalsBy - 11/18/2018
For most consumers, the company name “Alula” likely doesn’t carry much recognition. The primary reason here is that while Alula’s software and products are designed for consumers, it’s not sold directly to consumers. Instead, Alula’s software and products are primarily marketed to security companies looking to integrate smart home or commercial business security into their product offering.
That said, smaller security companies that are looking to make a better headway into the smart home security market can likely benefit from becoming a certified Alula dealer. From what we can tell, Alula’s products and services do appear to be high quality and simplified, making them a potentially great service to provide to consumers. Homeowners and businesses who want to find a security service that includes effective monitoring products and consumer-friendly software may want to seek out a security company that has partnered with Alula.
What Does Alula Offer?
Alula offers a range of products and services to security companies. While it puts a lot of emphasis on its integrated video monitoring app, Alula also provides:
- Indoor and outdoor security cameras
- Alarm communicators
- Intrusion sensors
- Environmental sensors and alarms (smoke, CO)
- Keypads and key fobs
- Control panels
- Panic pendants
- Translators / repeaters
For all intents and purposes, it sounds like Alula is a security company. And in a sense, they are. However, they are, again, a company designed to provide all of the smart home security needs that a security company would require.
Alula even markets a security package called Connect+, which includes the cameras, sensors, a control panel, and access to the Alula app. Connect+ looks reasonable enough and not too dissimilar from product packages you might get from security companies like Frontpoint or self-monitored systems you could purchase from companies like Ring, Nest, SmartThings, or abode.
Unfortunately, none of what looks to be an interesting and useful self-monitored security system is available to purchase directly. Consumers can’t even look up the prices in Alula’s product catalog. Instead, Alula strictly markets itself to certified dealers and only provides pricing information to certified dealers who request it.
The Benefit of Alula Products and Software
Alula’s products and integrated app appear to be the type of self-monitored solution consumers want.
From what we can tell, Alula’s products and software are centered around automation and integration. The products are designed to integrate together and be operated through the Alula app. Additionally, it appears that Alula’s products offer some key features, such as:
- Scenes and “Recipes”
- Multiple accounts
- Live and recorded video playback
- Motion detection
- Push notifications
Because Alula sells a large number of other products and some focused on the smart home, the app appears to also be able to control smart lights, locks, and thermostats. Some of these are products that Alula does not sell. However, the service explains that its universal alarm communicators can work with other systems and allow for remote setup from the service provider you choose.
What’s currently unclear about Alula and its products is whether there are any integrations with smart home services like Alexa or Google Home. There’s also no indication whether Alula’s products or apps can be integrated with any internet services like IFTTT, or whether it’s part of any programs like Works with Nest, or whether it utilizes any communications technologies like Z-Wave. That said, all of Alula’s products are designed to communicate wirelessly, including over Wi-Fi, 4G LTE networks, and Bluetooth.
Alula is also heavily promoting its Helix control panel. According to Alula, Helix is the “first professional security panel designed to deliver interactive security and home automation services from a customer’s mobile device.” Helix connects to other peripherals such as cameras and sensors wirelessly. It’s also designed to be monitored from the outside by the security services provider, who will get more detailed reports through the device over the users’ internet connection.
Where Can I Find an Alula Dealer?
Consumers interested in finding companies that sell Alula’s products might have to struggle a bit. Because of its business model, Alula does not have much to offer consumers. Companies looking to sell Alula’s products can easily find a long list of certified distributors of Alula’s products. Even searching around the web does not provide much detail for which companies are offering Alula’s products and services to consumers.
Alula does have a phone number consumers can call. But in searching for more information on how consumers can use their products, Alula only forwarded us sales information on how their app works.
