The Bottom Line
AMP Smart Equipment & Protection
AMP Security, a Utah-based security company, recently rebranded as AMP Smart. Their new brand now targets the smart home market using new equipment focused on home automation and smart security. They’ve also partnered with leading home automation companies such as Alarm.com and Qolsys.
The star of AMP Smart’s new equipment packages is the Smart Panel, a tablet-like control panel with a 7″ touchscreen interface that runs on Android OS. It supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LTE, and Z-Wave connectivity. It uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone so you can arm your system without walking up to the panel. It uses Wifi to connect to AMP Smart’s backend server, thus allowing their central station to monitor your system. It uses LTE for backup communication. Should your internet fail, the panel will still communicate using a cellular signal. And finally, it uses Z-Wave to connect with compatible home automation products.
The Smart Panel has built-in security features such as an integrated glass break sensor and a 5MP camera. The camera captures an image of who disarms the Smart Panel so you can see who disarmed it and when. Finally, the Smart Panel protects your privacy by encrypting all data coming from your connected devices. AMP Smart offers a wide range of security sensors and environmental sensors to complement the Smart Panel.
- Mini Door/Window Sensor– unobtrusive sensor that alerts you of unexpected door or window entry.
- Motion Sensor– pet-immune (under 40 lbs.) sensor that alerts you of unexpected motion
- Glass Break Sensor– always on sensor that detects the sound of broken glass
- Motion Image Sensor– motion sensor with a built-in camera to capture images
- Asset Safe– 0.5-cubic-foot safe with electronic lock that texts you every time it is opened
- Smoke Detector– photoelectric smoke sensor with built-in heat sensor to detect fire even when there is no smoke
- Carbon Monoxide Detector– always active sensor that detects the presence of poisonous carbon monoxide
- Flood Sensor– wall or floor mounted sensor that detects leaks and flooding to prevent costly repairs due to water damage
- Medical Wellness Button– waterproof panic button attached to a watch strap
All sensors are monitored by AMP Smart’s monitoring center. The glass break sensor, smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, flood sensor, and medical wellness button are always active. Whether your security system is armed or not, they still detect danger. All of the other sensors are only active when your system is armed.
Another key component of AMP’s system is the AMP Smart app, powered by Alarm.com. The app gives you the power to control your security system from anywhere in the world using your 3G/4G or Wi-Fi-connected smartphone. In a way, it’s like having a Smart Panel with you at all times. You can arm/disarm your security system, receive notifications if one of your sensors is triggered, watch live video feeds from your security cameras, and control home automation devices. Even better, you can setup the app to remind you to arm your system if you leave home without doing so. The AMP Smart app is available to Android and iOS users, as well as the Pebble Watch, Apple TV, and Kindle Fire TV.
Most of AMP Smart’s security features are clearly detailed on their website. However, what we don’t know is their pricing model. Instead of putting the details on their website, AMP urges interested customers to request a free quote by filling out an online form or by calling (800)817-3918.

Amp Smart for Home Automation
AMP’s smart panel integrates with home automation equipment from various brands. The smart thermostat, indoor camera, and outdoor camera are from Alarm.com. The doorbell camera is made by SkyBell. The smart outlet module and energy meter are made by GE. The smart lights are from Qolsys. The smart lock is from Yale. And the garage door controller is the LiftMaster myQ. You can also add other Z-Wave home automation devices to your system, although not all Z-Wave devices are guaranteed to work.
The beauty of having your security system and home automation combined under one control panel is that you can conveniently control both systems using one app or the Smart Panel. You can turn off your lights AND arm your security sensors at the same time. While you’re away, you can monitor cameras AND control the temperature without launching multiple apps.
AMP Smart can also automate your home using your phone’s location a.k.a. geofencing. You can tell your system what to do when you arrive home or when you leave. For example, it can automatically turn down your thermostat and turn off outlet modules when you leave home. And when you’re on your way home, it can automatically turn on lights, open the garage door, and set the thermostat back to your desired temperature. As mentioned earlier, geofencing is also used to remind you to arm your system when you leave.
AMP Smart is one of the few security systems that integrates with Amazon Echo. So if you have an Echo or other Alexa-enabled devices, you can use it to voice control your smart security system. Take note that some functions can’t be voice controlled. This is to protect your privacy and security. For example, you can’t disarm your sensors or cameras using your voice. You also can’t unlock your front door or open your garage door.
AMP Smart offers an indoor and an outdoor camera, both from Alarm.com. The indoor camera has an HD resolution, night vision of over 20 feet, and a 110° viewing angle. The outdoor camera is a bullet camera with HD resolution, 40-foot night vision, and an IP rating of 66 (dust and waterproof). Both cameras can record clips based on motion events, but AMP Smart does not specify how many clips you can save to the cloud.
You can also add the SkyBell HD doorbell camera to your system. SkyBell HD is a wired doorbell with the ability to stream videos to your phone and detect motion. It also allows you to speak using your smartphone with whoever’s at your front door. Finally, it can record motion-based clips.
Amp Smart Customer Service & Support
It’s hard to review AMP Smart’s customer service without reflecting back to their former brand, AMP Security. They currently hold a C BBB rating, which is a step down from their previous C+ rating. They are also the recipient of many negative reviews as well as complaints. The most common issue is sales misrepresentation. There are reports of sales agents who present themselves as agents from other companies looking to help homeowner’s “upgrade” their current security system, while in fact, they are there to install a new system from AMP Security. In fact, headlines of this same practice are rather easy to find online where it’s been reported that several people in Tennessee were duped into believing AMP was actually ADT.
Fast-talker shows up uninvited at my door yesterday…no service vehicle in sight…tells me he sees my ADT signs and is there to “upgrade my service.” He’s wearing AMP SMART shirt and hat…ADT Customer
AMP has also been known to promise features that are not really included in their package. Will rebranding shake off their ugly reputation and catapult them to a reputable status? Vivint’s managed to achieve something similar, but AMP is not headed down the right path. It’s been nearly a year since they changed their name, but their reputation remains the same. And to that point, they may be too late. There are so many other companies providing the same service that have never treated their customers poorly, Frontpoint is one example. For now, I’m calling AMP a pass, there are better options.
