Cove Home Security System ReviewBy - 12/20/2018
Pros: Professionally monitored system using a DIY approach. Flexible payment terms for equipment and monitoring.
Cons: No home automation offer, limited camera integration.
Bottom Line: Cove is a new company, but they offer good products and services. Their product line is limited which will limit its ability to act as a security system.
Cove is the new kid on the block. It was launched Spring of 2018, but the team behind it claims to have decades of combined experience in the home security industry backed by strong financial resources. From where I sit, that seems to be the case because they offer high-quality home security products and services with flexible payment terms.
Cove Equipment & Protection
Cove’s equipment is not as modern-looking as you might expect from a company that launched in 2018, but the most important thing to note is that it works. At least, according to most user reviews.
Cove Touch Alarm Panel
Every Cove security system requires a Cove Touch Alarm Panel, which is a tablet-like device that connects to and controls Cove’s security sensors. The alarm panel has several security features in place.
First, it offers a 24-hour battery backup. Even during a power outage, your home is protected. Once power is restored, the battery recharges automatically.
Second, the alarm panel uses cellular signals to communicate, which is the most secure form of communication in the alarm industry. Unlike landline and broadband communication, a cellular signal is less prone to disruptions.
Third, it self-diagnoses your system by regularly testing your wireless sensors. If a sensor responds as faulty, the Cove Touch Alarm Panel will notify you so you can immediately make repairs.
Fourth, it offers Cove LiveAssist. In an emergency situation, Cove’s monitoring center can call you directly via the alarm panel, and you can talk to them using two-way voice.
And last but not least, it offers Smash & Grab Protection. This feature allows the panel to detect smash and grabs, a tactic commonly used by intruders to disable alarm systems.
Sensors & Devices
Cove doesn’t offer many devices, but they offer just enough to cover an entire home. For security, they offer door and window sensors, motion sensors, glass break sensors, and remote key fobs. For life safety and environment monitoring, they offer smoke sensors, carbon monoxide sensors, flood sensors, and medical alert buttons.
The sensors and devices aren’t sold as part of a pre-built security system, so you’re free to mix and match as you wish. Simply add products to your cart on Cove’s website, choose a monitoring plan, and then check out. Cove will then ship your system to you. How about installation? Cove doesn’t require professional installation. Instead, they offer self-help videos and an on-screen installation guide with animations and step-by-step instructions accessible via Cove Touch. To make the process even easier, they’ll ship the system to you pre-configured.
When buying Cove equipment, you have two options. Your first option is to pay the full price of the equipment but enjoy a lower monthly monitoring fee. If you choose this option, you’ll pay $14.99 to $24.99 per month for monitoring, depending on which plan you choose.
The second option lowers the upfront cost of owning the system but increases your monthly monitoring fee to $24.99 up to $34.99 per month.
Cove’s equipment pricing is as follows:
- Cove Touch Alarm Panel: $239.00
- Door/Window Sensor: $15.00
- Motion Sensor: $30.00
- Glass Break Sensor: $70.00
- Key Fob: $25.00
- Smoke Sensor: $70.00
- Carbon Monoxide Sensor: $70.00
- Flood Sensor: $20.00
- Medical Alert Button$20.00
I secret shopped Cove to see how their pricing works. Based on the pricing above, a security system with an alarm panel, three door/window sensors, and one motion sensor will cost you $314. If you pay $314 upfront, you can get monitoring for as low as $14.99 and as high as $24.99 per month.
If you want to lower the upfront cost, you can pay $64 to purchase the system. However, monitoring will increase to $24.99 to $34.99 per month. This option also locks you into a 36-month monitoring contract. The good news is you can cancel the service anytime without paying the penalty, but you’ll have to cash out the equipment. The cashout amount is computed by subtracting your upfront payment from the original equipment cost. In this case, it’s $250 ($314 – $64). It doesn’t matter how far along in your contract you are, the cashout price is the same.
Once you’ve built your system, you’re required to pick from one of Cove’s two monitoring plans: Basic and Value.
|Price Per Month If Equipment Is Paid In Full||$14.99||$24.99|
|Price Per Month If Upfront Fee Is Lowered||$24.99||$34.99|
|Smash & Grab Protection|
|Automated System Check|
|Smartphone Push Alerts|
|$5/month Cove Equipment Reward|
|Equipment Warranty||1 Year||Lifetime|
Cove’s monitoring plans offer several interesting features. For example, they offer LiveAssist, Smash & Grab Protection, and Automated System Checks, all made possible by Cove Touch. Both plans also offer Cove InstaText. In an emergency, a text will be sent to your phone. You can quickly respond to the alert by replying to the text. For example, if you reply “send help,” they’ll dispatch emergency response units to your address.
There are also features offered only to Value plan subscribers. First is smartphone alerts and control. With this feature, you can use the Cove smartphone app to arm or disarm your system or check the status of your sensors. You’ll also get instant alerts via push notifications. The second feature is the Cove Equipment Reward. Every month, you’ll receive a $5 credit as long as you’re subscribed to the Value plan. You can use the credit to purchase additional equipment. And finally, instead of getting only a 1-year warranty on your equipment, you get a lifetime warranty.

Home Automation & Cameras
Unfortunately, if you’re looking for a security system that supports home automation, it’s time to look somewhere else. Cove’s smart home game is almost non-existent. The closest product they offer that relates to home automation is an indoor security camera. It’s not even theirs, but a simple camera that integrates with their system: the Yi 1080p Home Camera. It’s an inexpensive indoor camera that includes seven days of free cloud storage for alert videos. Our editor, Rose, has actually tested the camera and compared it to the likes of Wyze Cam v2.
Yi Home is an inexpensive camera and can be purchased on Amazon. You can also buy from Cove. They will the camera for $40.
Adding a security camera to your system won’t increase your monthly monitoring fee. Whether you’re subscribed to Basic or Value, you can add cameras to your system any time.
- No Smart Home Offerings
- Security Camera: Yi Home 1080p
- No Added Monthly Fee For Adding Camera
Cove may be new, but they’ve already made a name for themselves as a company that offers good customer service with customer-friendly policies.
Let’s talk about their policies first. Cove offers professional monitoring, but they don’t tie their customers to long-term contracts. If you pay the full price of your equipment up front, you can cancel anytime. There is a 36-month contract if you choose to lower your upfront payment, but there are no hefty penalty fees if you cancel before the contract ends. Instead, you cash out your equipment. Other security companies charge a penalty equal to your monthly subscription fee multiplied by the number of months remaining in your contract.
On top of that, they offer Cove with a 60-day money-back guarantee. If you don’t like the system, you can ship it back for a full refund.
Next, as Cove is a completely wire-free system, it’s easy to move to a new residence. Simply inform Cove before your move and ask them to update your address.
In case you need help with your system, whether troubleshooting, maintenance, or installation, you can count on self-help videos and articles on Cove’s website. You can also use the live chat feature on their website. They are available Mondays through Fridays from 9 AM to 6 PM MST. For more urgent concerns, they also have email and phone support.
