Stilla Motion: A Portable Motion SensorBy - 09/13/2016
A lot of items go missing everyday—keys, wallets, bags, phones, socks. And most of them are gone for good. There are two common reasons why we lose our things: we’re forgetful, or we’re unlucky. Stilla Motion aims to solve both problems.
What Is Stilla Motion?
Stilla Motion is a pocket-sized motion and location tracker. It monitors whatever you put it on or in. For instance, you can stick it on your door and be notified if the door is opened. Or you can place it in your purse to know if your purse is moved. Since it is portable, you can use one Stilla for multiple purposes.
Stilla connects to your phone or smartwatch via Bluetooth Low Energy and notifies you if the item you’re monitoring is moved. Aside from that, it can also notify you using its 85dB speaker. You can choose (from the mobile app) either of the two notification modes, or you can choose both.
Stilla isn’t just a simple motion sensor; it’s smart. It uses an algorithm that cancels out recurring motion and only notifies you of unwanted activity. For example, what if you’re on a moving train and you want to monitor your luggage? Stilla will recognize that motion created by the moving train is normal, but if someone moves your luggage, there’s a problem.
For now, Stilla’s ability to detect motion is limited by its Bluetooth range. You will get smartphone or smartwatch alerts as long as you’re within its range, which is an impressive 150 feet in optimal conditions. That said, you can’t use it to monitor, let’s say, your jewelry box at home while you’re away. However, a second device called Stilla Connect is under way. The Stilla Connect is a Bluetooth to Wi-Fi bridge. The bridge forwards alerts to you using your internet so that you can monitor your valuables at home no matter where you are.
Aside from motion alerts, Stilla can also send you location alerts. Location alerts are triggered when you move out of Bluetooth range. Like motion alerts, you are notified of location alerts via push notification or by sound.
Location alerts are only sent when Stilla’s motion sensor is active.
Stilla can help you locate your belongings if you manually activate the siren using your smartphone. Hear the sound? Find your device. Of course, you need to be within Bluetooth range.
However, the device is being prepped for an upgrade that will give it wide range tracking ability. My best guess is that it will use Crowd GPS. Crowd GPS is a secure peer-to-peer connection that allows one device (Stilla) to connect to another (your smartphone) by relaying a wireless signal to nearby compatible devices (smartphones of other Stilla users). Other tracking devices like TrackR, also use such technology.
Stilla comes in 3 colors—Sleek Silver, True Black, and Snow White. It has a polycarbonate housing that is durable and temperature resistant. It is, however, not waterproof. It is only resistant to dust and water splash.
Stilla is powered by a CR2016 coin cell battery. There are still no details on how long the battery will last, but since it uses a coin cell battery, you can easily replace it when needed.
Aside from Stilla Connect and location tracking, there are other plans.
We plan to open up our API and integrate with other relevant services as soon as we can. We will start with opening up our API for a few select companies as well as our Stilla Ambassadors team.
