Will Deactivated Cell Towers Impact Home Security Systems?By - 03/17/2015
The media loves a good hype story and right now some are latching onto a story saying that those with cellular alarms will soon be at risk.
Deactivation of 2G Cellular Alarm Towers and Home Security
The back story is based on fact. As more and more cell phone users update to 4G phones, 2G is becoming increasingly obsolete. Cell phone carriers will start to convert old 2G towers to newer technology and they have announced that they will stop providing 2G service by 2016. Even though you may see this hype in current news articles and on news channels this is nothing new. T-Mobile was well on their way to moving their 2G client base off of 2G in 2014 according to The Verge and AT&T started down this road in 2012. Security providers are aware and are being proactive about matters.
Next Steps for Home Alarm Companies
Most home alarm companies started taking actions to update customers a couple of years ago. ADT is working to proactively update customers as are multiple regional providers. We checked with Frontpoint as well to get their take on the matter. According to Frontpoint,
We we’re able to get out in front of this. Frontpoint only sends out 3G radios now and anyone that had a 2G radio was upgraded to the 3G radio.
More than likely your home alarm provider has already taken proactive measures to protect you. However, it can’t hurt to ask. If you’ve owned your home security equipment for more than a couple of years I suggest that you give your alarm provider a call just to make sure. Beyond being unprotected, upgrading to a new panel will give you a better overall experience. Think of 2G cellular as dial-up internet and 4G as being broadband. It’s a lot faster and in the event of an emergency you are going to want help fast.
On the downside, many home security companies are taking advantage of this opportunity. Companies are basically forcing customers to buy new equipment or sign-up for new plans. Keep in mind that when the 2G towers are deactivated, any 2G alarm system will not work. Companies that would continue to charge customers a monthly fee for alarms that do not work are despicable. We recommend companies that are taking care of their customers without taking advantage of the situation. Companies like Frontpoint, Link, and ADT are all making sure that customers are okay. This is the type of home security company you want to do business with.
